HORATIO GARDEN

Horatio Garden is an award-winning, national charity which improves the lives of everyone, affected by spinal injury; Through creating and nurturing beautiful garden spaces in NHS spinal injury centres.

Renowned garden designers and architects develop these peaceful havens, creating a thriving community that becomes an integral part of people's lives whilst in hospital.

The charity employs a head gardener who works with with a dedicated team of wonderful volunteers (including me). They tend to the garden to ensure it is a stunning sanctuary year-round and organise for patients enjoyment and supporting their rehabilitation.

The charity is named after Horatio Chapple, who was a volunteer at the spinal Centre in Salisbury during his school holidays. Horatio came up with the original idea for the garden. His life was tragically cut short in the summer of 2011 at the age of 17. He died while on an adventure holiday to Svalbard with the British Schools Exploring Society, He was was killed by the bear as he emerged from his tent.

The Chairty currently has 8 gardens across UK, with Sheffield being the latest. Our eighth project will bring the 'Best in Show' show garden at RHS Chelsea Flower Show 2023 to form the heart of Horatio's Garden Sheffield & East at the Princess Royal Spinal Injuries Centre at Northern General Hospital in Sheffield in 2024.

I have volunteered here since 2021, and I can say it has been one of my most rewarding jobs I've ever been involved with. It's not been about what I take from the experience, but what I put into the role.  It has been wonderful to get along side patients, visitors and volunteers and see the positive impact Horatio Garden has on everyone.

Horatio Garden welcomes your support to ensure these special places continue for future generations. Please consider how you to can get involved by volunteering, fund raising, donating.

You're nearest Garden is located within the Midlands Spinal Centre at the Orthopaedic Hospital in Gobwen. www.horatiosgarden.org.uk
