BEYOND THE WARDROBE

I hadn't intended to write this today. I was just dabbling in writing a poem on the reasons I don't write. It is just gone seven in the morning. After the early morning routine and making a brew a friends post caught my eye. It sent me back to childhood memories of the author they were mentioning. And the flood gates opened in my comment on their post. They mentioned Chronicles of Narnia and as as you will see it set me of sharing in my own experiences of this fabulous series of books.

Chronicles of Narnia was part of my childhood, especially hearing Dad read them to us as bedtime story. Not only just reading them to use but the use tones switching between the characters and narratives. The way our attention was kept entering a world beyond our own. Making it so real that we would physically climb into the wardrobe to see if there was a way to this other world.

Even now as adults the Chronicles of Narnia still facinate, although from childhood to adulthood we know the sense of the deep magic, another world to be fiction. This is the genius of C.S.Lewis creating characters that represented biblical characters and ideologies.

Lewis, after rejecting his childhood faith to become a staunch atheist, Lewis converted to Christianity in his 30s, around 1931, following discussions with J.R.R. Tolkien. By the time he wrote Narnia, he was a well-known Christian apologist. As writer myself attending writing groups Tolkien and Lewis would have been the original writers group of their day. I can well imagine therefore how there meetings would carry creativity, debate and philosophy. I often wonder did Lewis know his works would go on to be the classics of today that inspire so many in faith journeys and creative ambitions.

For me the likes of Lewis and Roald Dahl inspire me as a writer. Yet I never have found an interest in Tolkien and thing like Harry Potter. Another favourite of mine is Patricia StJohn, especially 'Treasures of the Snow' again another story focusing on faith, forgiveness and hope.

And  in case your wondering; the poem about reasons I don't write, never did get finished.  It is just parked up for now.
