REUNITED WITH THE FATHER
I was sat in my lounge this morning and I suddenly started thinking about being 'reunited with the Father.' Not so much our earthly fathers but that of our Heavenly Father. It also got me thinking about moments in the bible scriptures where we read about children and their fathers being reunited. The first that came to mind was Joseph and his Father, son of Jacob, known for his coat of many colours and his rise to power in Egypt (Genesis 46:28-34). Jacob believed that his son was dead, yet Joseph, who had become a high official in Egypt, reveals his identity to his brothers who had come seeking food during a famine. Jacob is overjoyed to learn that his son is alive and in a position of power. The reunion takes place in the land of Goshen, where Jacob's family settles.
As I started thinking and reading about this account of being reunited with the Father another biblical story came to mind. The parable of the Prodigal Son, found in Luke 15:11-32, tells the story of a father and his two sons. The younger son demands his inheritance early, leaves home, and squanders his wealth. He then returns home, destitute and seeking forgiveness, and is joyfully welcomed back by his father. The older son, who remained loyal and hardworking, is resentful of his father's celebration of the prodigal son's return. The parable explores themes of forgiveness, repentance, and God's unconditional love.
I paused for a moment and tried to imagine what it must have been like for both these Father's and Sons. I am not a parent myself but can imagine there must and could have been a tidal wave of emotions in each of them. Yet neither of the Father's turned their sons away despite the circumstances as to why they left. Jacob as I can recall loved each of his sons despite what they had done to their younger brother.
In today's society we often hear and read about being reunited with Father's and children who've been separated. One of the television programmes that we see this happening (and a favourite of mine) is ITV’s 'Long lost family.' "Long lost family" takes us on an often-emotional journey following the lives of relatives, usually close family members like parents, siblings, or children, who have been separated from each other for a significant period. Often due to circumstances like adoption, estrangement, or abandonment. These individuals may have been searching for each other for years and are seeking a reunion. The show is often someone's last resort, often a child or parent for whatever reason can't ever be traced.
Possibly and almost certainly the most known 'Father and son reunions is that of Jesus reunited with his fathers. This can refer to two key events in the Bible; The first can be found in Luke 2:41-52. "Finding Jesus the Temple," where a young Jesus, at age twelve, is found in the Temple after being separated from his parents, Mary and Joseph, during a pilgrimage. Jesus, when questioned by his parents, says, "Did you not know that I must be in my Father's house?
The second and most widely known is found in Luke 2:41-52. This is Jesus's ascension into heaven, where he is reunited with God the Father. After his resurrection, Jesus spends forty days with his disciples. On the fortieth day, he ascends into heaven, where he is seated at the right hand of the Father.
Reconnecting with a parent can also involve a journey of self-reflection, healing, and forgiveness as individuals navigate past hurts and build new connections. It is programmes like 'Long lost family' where these stories of healing, forgiveness and reconciliation begin with the help of professionals who often unseen.
As believers we can be united and reunited with our Heavenly Father on a daily basis. We are imperfect human beings, we might stray from our Father like the son in the parable I mentioned earlier in this blog had done. Yet just as the Father in that parable he welcomed his son back with open arms, God the Father welcomes with open arms. I will leave us with this question; Are we ready, willing and open to being reunited and connecting with the Father every day?
As I was writing this blog this morning and without knowing, I received an email telling us about a dear faithful Christian lady in our fellowship. She was promoted to glory this morning and is now reunited with her Heavenly Father. Had God laid this creative writing piece on my heart for a reason or was it just coincidental.
God bless
